Default Pattern

Use this pattern to nudge customers into making a circular choice. A default, also called opt-out, is used in many countries for example to have a higher proportion of citizens being organ donors.

  • The Default Pattern is a behavioral design pattern that is used in several patterns across all stages of the customer experience.

A default, also called opt-out, is used in many countries for example to have a higher proportion of citizens being organ donors.

This is regarded as a dark pattern, so please decide for yourself if you want to use it.

In the registration process of the product, the circular mode is already enabled by default. This is also called a ready-made decision or an opt-out, which means that the customer has the choice to uncheck this feature. An opt-in would be an unchecked box that he can check to enable the service.

A-B-testing has proven that many users stay with a default, as it looks like the average choice that everyone makes, and people like to behave like everyone else to fit in.

If the services in circular mode would cost money, this default would actually be illegal in a growing number of countries.

If the customer unchecks the box, he is confronted with two other behavioral design patterns regarded as dark patterns, called aversion loss and social acceptance, which are also described in this section of the library.

Finally, the button to proceed with circular mode is more conveniently placed than the cross to just close the overlay and proceed without it.

  • Circular services are unfamiliar to customers.

  • By setting circular services as the default for products, more customers will accept and use them.
