  • The Consider Product-as-a-service Pattern is part of the purchase stage of the customer experience.

On the product detail page of an online shop, the customer is offered the option to compare the ownership of the product he has chosen to subscribing to a more durable model.

On the next screen, he can compare the specifications of the two options. The specifications are chosen in a way that make the more circular option always look better than ownership, like included service, durability and repairability.

This is called framing and regarded as a dark pattern. Please decide for yourself wether you want to use it.

By choosing the subscription option the customer proceeds to check out.

  • Customers are used to subscription models and flat rates for digital media, but not for hardware products.

  • If ownership of the product remains with the manufacturer throughout the life cycle, the company has an incentive to design the products more durable, easy to maintain and repairable.
